This one was written when I was in college. This is another one that I actually use in my English classes, without telling my students who wrote it. I ask them to look for exact rhymes and slant rhymes, and I have them contrast the depth of meaning with an Emily Dickinson poem.
I Hum a Melody, by Anneliese Kvamme
I hum a melody
all my own
a tune I make up
as I go along,
And you hum your tunes
not at all the same
as mine; they follow
a different time–
So we both go on singing
along with the breeze
Not noticing we create
harmonies–
